Why do we need to do research on HMG?
Hyperplastic Mammary Gland (HMG) is an overgrowth of the cells that line the ducts or the milk glands inside the breast. It often causes pain and nodules in the breast. Some of them disappear by itself after a few months. A majority of women may experience more breast pain around menstruation because cells inside mammary glands are sensitive to hormone changes. When pain is severe, one may feel pain in her chest, upper back, or shoulder. Breast pain is often the first symptom a woman notices before seeking medical help. Severe or constant breast pain may affect a woman’s daily activity or emotion. Asymptomatic HMG (neither pain nor appearance changes) are dangerous because no attention is paid and a small number of HMG may develop breast cancer. Our questionnaire is designed to help researchers understand the risk factors, symptoms and signs, and emotional status of HMG. Our goal is to utilize the information to develop a comprehensive diagnostic tool that assists in the treatment of HMG with acupuncture (for pain), traditional herbal medicine(for regulation of hormone), diet and exercise (for stability of mind and emotion). |
